At $4/day for the Shakeology meal replacement drinks, some can’t swallow the investment in their health and went looking for alternatives.  This article details some of the major competitors that I found, as well as how they stacked up to Shakeology.

Criteria for a Shakeology Alternative

Some things that we are looking for in an ideal meal replacement drink are competitive pricing, taste, proven results, solid quality and natural ingredients, and a comprehensive guarantee from an established company.

Shakeology vs. Myoplex

We’ll take a look at Myoplex first.  Myoplex  has 290 calories, various minerals and vitamins and comes in an assortment of flavors (chocolate cream, strawberry cream, and vanilla cream).  The cost of Myoplex is cheaper – at $59.99 for 20 servings  – or around $3/serving before shipping/tax.

Looking at the ingredients of myoplex, there are some serious differences though.  On the positive side, myoplex has 42 grams of protein. Unfortunately myoplex contains sucralose – which is an artificial sweeteners and  has been shown to have negative attributes which are negative to your health.

At 290 calories, it contains 150 calories more per serving (over 100% more!) than Shakeology.  It contains 4.5 grams of fat – which is over 800% more than Shakeology! Diving deeper, myoplex lacks the variety of vitamins, minerals, probiotic blends, enzymes, and fruits that Shakeology contains. Here is a chart that breaks down some major differences:

MYOPLEX SHAKEOLOGY
Calories 290 140
Fat 4.5 grams <0.5 grams
Cholesterol 17% 3%
Protein 42 grams 15 grams
Fiber 3 grams 3 grams
Vitamin C 100% 300%

50% 100%
Calcium
60% 50%
Vitamin B6 45% 100%
Vitamin B12 none (!) 100%
Cost per serving
$3 $4

Myoplex is generic and skimpy to say the least in the ingredients it includes with its drinks. Myoplex contains 24 vitamins and minerals versus Shakeology’s 70+ high quality ingredients including prebiotics, digestive enzymes, vitamins and minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients. Not to mention that the amounts of the ingredients that you want from their product are not found in the same quantity that are in Shakeology.

Lastly, is the taste … myoplex has an inferior chalky taste that leaves drinking it more like a chore. Consensus is that although myoplex is cheaper, it is a poor Shakeology alternative.

Shakeology vs. Slim Fast

Shakeology AlternativeAnother Shakeology alternative we examined was slim fast.  Slim fast costs around $2/serving and comes in a number of flavors including: chocolate, strawberry, french vanilla, and cappuccino. Slim fast has 190 calories per serving – which is 50 more than Shakeology.  Not to bad yet … but about to get worse.  Unfortunately, the slim fast shake contains acesulfame potassium (a non-nutrutuve sweetener), and aspartame – both of these have very troubling health effects and should have no business in a healthy nutritional drink.

The biggest positive for slim fast is that it contains 2 grams more of fiber than Shakeology, and its cheaper price.  But what sense is paying less for a product that isn’t coming close to accomplishing what you need it to. Examining this Shakeology alternative more closely, here is a summary of some differences:

Lastly, the taste was again lacking.  Although it came in an assortment of flavors – the consistency once mixed and taste was chalky and bland.

Shakeology vs. Isagenix

Isagenix is another possible Shakeology alternative that we researched.  Isagenix offers a meal replacement shake that comes in two main flavors: creamy chocolate, and creamy vanilla.  Isagenix comes close in price to Shakeology at $3.50/serving, not including shipping or tax.

On the plus side isagenix contains more protein (23 vs. 15 grams for Shakeology) – but on the negative side it contains 1100% more fat than Shakeology (6 grams in Isagenix vs. <0.5 grams in Shakeology).  It contains many naturally occurring ingredients which sets it apart from most meal replacement drinks – but so does Shakeology. Another negative of the Isagenix is that it contains 240 calories vs. the 140 that is found in Shakeology.   Isagenix contains more than 10% cholesterol vs. 3% cholesterol in Shakeology, and 8% sodium compared to less than 4% in Shakeology.

Looking at some other important nutritional information in this Shakeology alternative, it was found that isagenix lacked the potency of the vitamins and minerals that Shakeology contains.  Isagenix has only 40% of the daily recommended allowance of Vitamin C versus 300% in Shakeology.  It lacks significance of other vitamins contained in every Shakeology drink such as Vitamin B1, B2, and B3.

Unfortunately, isagenix contains fructose as a sweetener.  Fructose can be harmful in three fronts:  1) it can increase risk for heart disease by increasing triglycerides; 2) can cause insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes; and 3) can actually cause weight gain do to failing to release appetite-regulating hormones that leave you feeling unsatisfied with the need to actually eat more.

For these reasons, isagenix definitely takes a back seat to Shakeology.  For this Shakeology alternative to be only 50 cents/serving less than the real thing, I’d go for Shakeology due to its superior nutritional value, lack of artificial sweeteners, less fat, less calories, and less cholesterol/sodium.  You would literally have to drink 2-4 isagenix drinks to get the same concentration of vitamins and minerals from a single Shakeology drink!

Shakeology vs. Herbalife

Another Shakeology alternative is Herbalife Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix. On the positive side, Herbalife meal replacement drinks come in more flavors including:  french vanilla, cookies and cream, chocolate, cafe latte, tropical fruit, pina colada, and wild berry.  It has 90 calories per serving (compared to Shakeology’s 140), but has twice the fat (1 gram in Herbalife vs. <0.5 gram in Shakeology).

Upon diving deeper into the concentrations of vitamins and minerals in this Shakeology alternative, I found it contains a mere fraction of the nutritional value of a single Shakeology drink.  Here are a few of the many differences:

Slim Fast

Cost per serving
$2.16 $4

The cost is $25.15 for a 550 gram container (~5 cents per gram as opposed to ~8 cents/gram for Shakeology).  It was trickier to compare price per serving size because the Herbalife contains only 25 grams of formula verus 48 grams used for Shakeology.

Herbalife does not appear to contain any artificial sweeteners, but it also doesn’t contain anywhere near the nutritional value or comprehensive natural ingredients of a Shakeology drink. I give Herbalife a positive for the multitude of flavors, but they don’t stack up in taste against either the chocolate or greenberry flavors that Shakeology offers.

Shakeology Alternative – Final Thoughts

In looking for a viable “Shakeology alternative”, I found products that were cheaper in price – but also violated the very reasons for which I wanted to drink a meal replacement drink in the first place.  Besides having more calories, fat, sodium, and cholesterol than the Shakeology meal replacement drink, the drinks had less vitamins and minerals than are contained in Shakeology.

Shakeology AlternativeThe Shakeology alternatives had nowhere near the variety of natural ingredients included with each Shakeology shake including:  barley grass, wheat grass, kamut grass, maca powder, blueberry powder, acerola powder, camu-camu powder, bilberry powder, pomegranate powder, lycium (goji) powder, acai berry powder, maitake powder, cordyceps, reishi powder, citrus bioflavanoids, rose hips powder, schisandra powder, gingko powder, suma powder, quinoa, pea fiber, MSM, spinach powder, blue green algae, astragalus powder, apple pectin powder, hydrilla, spirulina, chlorella, chia seed, flax seed, yacon, sacha inchi, oat grass, amaranth, grape seed extract, green tea decaffeinated extract, ashwagandha powder, bromelain, protease, lipase, lactase, cellulase, papain, amylase, bifodobacterium longum, lactobacillus acidophilus, lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1, lactobacillus bulgaricus, lactobacillus casei, streptococcus thermophilus, whey protein, and holy basil powder.

Although some Shakeology alternatives were available in a wider assortment of favors, taste was no competition.  Shakeology mixes superiorly and has a smooth taste that keeps your hunger satisfied and tastes more like a premium drink from an upscale coffee shop.

The Shakeology alternatives almost all contained harmful artificial sweeteners as ingredients – including acesulfame potassium, aspartame, fructose, and sucralose.  These damaging ingredients have no place in a meal replacement supplement that is being taken to improve your health.

And The Winner Is …..

In looking for a Shakeology alternative, it became extremely evident that no company stands even remotely close to the superior Shakeology drinks.  With meal replacement drinks, you most certainly get what you pay for.  Combining an unrivaled taste, superior and natural ingredients, proven track record, reasonable cost, and a 100% money-back guarantee – Shakeology is definitely the best choice.

When you look at the amount it would cost to assemble anywhere near the list of ingredients that each Shakeology drink contains – $4 a serving is a fantastic bargain.  Remember that most people spend more that $4/day on a coffee shop latte or frappuccino – and think of how much healthier a Shakeology drink would be for you!

When looking for a viable Shakeology alternative, it has become quite clear that nothing compares to the quality and value that you receive with Shakeology. Shakeology drinks are a vastly superior product that come backed by an A+ Better Business Bureau accredited company, and who has a long history of excellence in the health and fitness world.

What speaks higher about the company’s willingness to stand behind their product than a 30 day money-back guarantee! I enjoy my Shakeology meal replacement drink each morning – and my life has benefitted from the weight loss, stronger immune system, energy increase, cholesterol decrease, and increased digestive absorption and regularity. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this Shakeology review, it’s a great meal replacement shake that not only tastes great — it’s ultra-healthy to boot.
